RoMac's Marketing Team sat down with Phil Mastrosimone, owner of Mastrosimone Construction, to talk about a career shaped by craftsmanship, creativity, and a deep focus on relationships. For nearly four decades in Lake County, his work has been defined not just by the homes he builds, but by the people he builds them with.

From Music to Construction

Phil’s path into building was not a straight line. His early influence came from his father. “At an early age, my dad was in construction and he did more of the concrete business. And he taught me to work really, really hard.” His father had a different vision for him. “But he didn't want me to do that type of work. He wanted me to do something that was a little less on your body.”

That led Phil in another direction. “I was good at playing the trumpet. So, he suggested I maybe should go to school to get my music degree.” Phil followed that advice. “So, I got my degree in music. I went to New York City real quick to see if I could make it in music. It was really hard to do that.”

Eventually, his path brought him back to construction. “And then I moved to Florida. I got my first experience in the building industry, but then I decided to go on my own and do a little bit of carpentry work.” With encouragement from a mentor, that step became something bigger. “A mentor of mine told me that, ‘You know, you should probably try to get your builder’s license’. So, I went and got my builder’s license.”

A Focus on High-End Craftsmanship

Today, Mastrosimone Construction is known for luxury custom homes built with attention to detail and quality materials. “What we do at Mastrosimone Construction, we're more of a high-end luxury builder. We use very high-end materials, quality materials, quality products from RoMac, the best windows, the best garage doors.”

That partnership has played a role in the company’s success. “They've been a great partner for me. Really, a strategic partner for Mastrosimone Construction.”

At the center of every project is the client’s vision. “We really focus on the clientele's vision and giving them a high-end quality product.”

Building Relationships First

For Phil, construction is not just about the finished product. “Relationships are everything.” That philosophy defines how he approaches every project. “I don't build houses. I build relationships.”

That perspective is reflected in the experience clients have working with him. One homeowner shared, “When Tina and I decided to build a house, there was no question, hands down, we were going to use Phil.” The process itself becomes part of the experience. “Phil is very detailed. We bounce our ideas off of each other. He would a lot of times draw something up. That was exciting to see it come through to almost real life.”

The result is something clients remember. “He has this unbelievable artistic ability of drafting something out of your head and putting it into real life. And so, it's just been an unbelievable experience.”

A Family and Team Effort

Family plays a central role in the business. “My son Ryan has been working with me since he was 12 years old.” Phil sees that same drive in the next generation. “He's really good at working with his hands. He's got a great mind, so he solves a lot of problems. As well as my other son, Philip.”

That work ethic is something he continues to pass down. “That hard work ethic, you know, that's what I'm trying to instill in my kids.”

His appreciation for his family is clear. “I'm so proud of both of my kids and my wife. God bless her. She's done a fantastic job. She works really, really hard.” Their support is foundational. “I couldn't do it without her and I couldn't do it without Ryan. Those two people hold me together. So, that's what keeps me in the business.”

A Standard Recognized

Over the years, Mastrosimone Construction has earned recognition for its work. “In 2007, I joined the HBA. I put my personal home in the Parade, and it won a grand award.” That project made history. “It was actually the first house in the history of the Parade of Homes to ever win a perfect score.”

More recently, the recognition has continued. “Last year, we took a bunch of awards, but I didn't win any awards. My team won the awards.” For Phil, that distinction matters. “I'm just the face of it, but I couldn't do it without all my people.”

He often compares his role to his musical background. “Being a musician, I'm nothing but a conductor.” The team around him brings everything together. “I look at all my musicians as my subcontractors.” Each trade plays its part. “I'm nothing without the team that I've built. These guys are really truly good craftsmen and they really care about what they do.”

A Process Built on Connection

Phil’s favorite part of building happens during the process itself. “What I love about what I do is not building homes. It's about building relationships.” Communication is essential. “Communication is everything. That's number one in my business.”

That connection begins early. “When I'm actually building the home, I really, really like spending time with the owners, learning their lifestyle, how they entertain with their friends and their family.” It becomes a shared experience. “It's a fun process.”

Built to Last

For Phil, quality is about longevity. “In 50 years they'll look as good as I did when I built them 50 years ago because I do not compromise on materials.”

He is drawn to clients who want something unique. “I like working with people that are creative and they want something different.” That challenge drives his work. “Something that they didn't think they could ever get. That's my passion.”

At the core of Mastrosimone Construction is a simple idea. “If you can dream it and you can think of it, we can probably put it together.”

This RoMac Builder’s Spotlight highlights a builder focused on craftsmanship, relationships, and creating homes that reflect the people who live in them.
