RoMac Builder’s Spotlight: Jorge Gutierrez of Insight Group on Building Relationships & Taking on Challenges

RoMac Building Supply’s Team sat down with Jorge Gutierrez, founder of Insight Group, to talk about his journey through the construction industry, the growth of his businesses and the relationships that have helped shape his career. From his first job installing asphalt roofing to serving six years with the U.S. Air Force’s RED HORSE units, Jorge’s story reflects a hands-on approach to building, a willingness to take on challenges and a commitment to transparency.
Today, Insight Group encompasses three businesses serving commercial construction, custom homebuilding and marine construction. With a growing footprint and ambitious plans for the future, Jorge continues to build on the principles that have guided him throughout his career.
Where It All Started
Jorge’s career in construction began on a roofing job site. His first job involved installing asphalt roofing, a demanding introduction to the industry that gave him an appreciation for the work and the people behind every project.
Despite the heat and physical demands, Jorge enjoyed the experience of using his hands to create something tangible. Being part of a crew and contributing to a larger project gave him a sense of satisfaction that stayed with him.
In 2008, when the recession hit, Jorge began looking for a new direction. He discovered the construction division of the U.S. Air Force and enlisted, serving six years with RED HORSE, a specialized unit trained to establish construction capabilities in remote and challenging locations.
His work involved helping get essential infrastructure in place, including electricity and water, so operations could get up and running.
That experience became an important chapter in his life, exposing him to challenging environments and reinforcing the importance of working together to accomplish a mission.
Building a Life Beyond the Job Site
While construction remains a major part of Jorge’s life, he is equally passionate about his family.
During the interview, he shared that he has two daughters, ages 21 and 18, and a young son. Despite the demands of running multiple businesses, fatherhood remains the role he describes as the most rewarding.
"I love, love being a father. It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever done."
For Jorge, family is an important part of what makes the hard work worthwhile. This perspective extends beyond the projects he completes to the people and relationships that gives 'hard work' meaning.
Growing Insight Group
Insight Group began with Insight Construction, initially taking on a variety of projects as opportunities arose. As the business grew, Jorge developed a more specialized approach, establishing distinct companies focused on different areas of construction.
Today, each business has its own focus:
Insight Construction specializes in commercial build-outs and complex specialty trades for larger contractors.
Insight Homes focuses on custom homes valued at approximately $1 million and above, excluding the cost of the property.
Insight Marine specializes in docks and seawalls for oceanfront properties.
This structure allows each company to concentrate on its area of expertise while contributing to the larger vision for Insight Group.
Jorge’s ambitions extend beyond Florida. With the opening of Insight Homes of Illinois, the company is now building in the Chicago market. Expanding the custom homebuilding business into multiple states is a major priority as he looks toward the next chapter of growth.
For Jorge, growth means continuing to pursue new opportunities while building on the experience and capabilities developed over the years.
Bringing a Vision to Life
One of the projects featured in Jorge’s interview offers a closer look at the planning and problem-solving involved in custom home construction.
Working with an investor who had a specific vision for the property, Jorge and his team faced an early challenge: incorporating a swimming pool into an area where space was limited.
Rather than treating the pool as an afterthought, they knew it needed to be addressed first. That decision influenced the planning process and required careful coordination to make the overall vision work.
The finished home features 12-foot ceilings on the first floor, 10-foot ceilings on the second, concrete construction between the floors and expansive windows throughout.
One of the most striking details is the front entry, which features a door measuring eight feet wide by 12 feet tall.
From the beginning, Jorge wanted a clear sightline from the front door all the way to the back of the home. The design was intended to create a sense of openness and make the interior feel larger than its actual footprint.
"We knew from the beginning I wanted to be able to see from the front door all the way to the back, make it appear larger than what it really is. And I think we accomplished what we wanted."
The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning, creative problem-solving and attention to architectural details can help bring a distinctive vision to life.
A Relationship Built Over 20 Years
For Jorge, a successful construction business is built on more than projects alone. The relationships developed along the way play an important role in keeping work moving and helping businesses grow.
His relationship with RoMac Building Supply spans more than 20 years and began with his sales representative, John.
The two knew each other as acquaintances in high school, but their relationship grew after graduation. Jorge remembers coming to pick up materials and seeing John help load his truck. Later, when John became a salesperson and was assigned to Jorge’s account, their professional relationship became even stronger.
Jorge has been a licensed contractor since 2007 and had an account with RoMac even before becoming licensed.
Over the years, that relationship has developed into a valued partnership. Jorge describes John as a tremendous help, highlighting how familiarity, trust and consistent support can make a lasting difference in the construction industry.
"Having a relationship goes a long way. John is my sales rep. He’s been such a huge help."
At RoMac Building Supply, relationships like this are at the heart of what we do. Supplying building materials is one part of the job; getting to know the contractors we serve and supporting them as their businesses evolve is just as important.
Jorge’s story is a reminder that meaningful business relationships are not built overnight. They grow through years of working together, showing up and understanding what matters to the people on the other side of the counter.
Transparency Is the Best Way to Build
When asked about his approach to construction, Jorge returned to one principle: transparency.
For him, building trust begins with being honest with subcontractors and customers. Clear communication means addressing challenges directly, setting expectations and making sure people understand what is happening throughout a project.
He recognizes that the truth is not always what someone wants to hear, but believes that honest conversations are essential to maintaining strong working relationships.
"Transparency is the best way to build."

That philosophy is especially important in an industry where multiple trades, schedules, materials and moving parts must come together. Problems will arise, but how a team communicates and responds can determine how effectively those challenges are handled.
Jorge believes customers deserve straightforward answers, even when the conversation is difficult. Rather than avoiding problems, he sees addressing them as a fundamental part of his responsibility as a builder.
"We have to communicate and be transparent with our customers, even though they might not like it."
.For Jorge, accountability means staying engaged when things get complicated and continuing to work toward a solution.
"We’re not going anywhere. We take on problems all day, every day. That’s our job."
It is a practical approach rooted in the realities of construction: every project presents its own challenges and strong communication helps teams navigate them together.
